Wisdom Teeth Removal in Ste. Genevieve, MO

Evaluating Wisdom Teeth Close to Home

Wisdom teeth are the last molars to develop, and they do not always have enough space to come in properly. Some wisdom teeth erupt normally and can be monitored. Others may become difficult to clean, partially trapped under the gums, angled toward nearby teeth, or associated with discomfort and inflammation. An evaluation helps determine whether the teeth should be monitored, removed in-office, or referred to a specialist.
Ste. Genevieve Family Dental Care evaluates wisdom teeth with the same practical approach used throughout the practice. The visit includes a review of the patient’s symptoms, age, oral health, tooth position, and imaging before making a recommendation. In-house 3D CBCT imaging may be used for wisdom tooth evaluation when a more detailed view is needed.

What Can Be Treated In-Office

Basic wisdom teeth removal is performed in-office when the case is appropriate. Deeply impacted wisdom teeth are referred out. This is an important distinction because some wisdom teeth are positioned close to nerves, sinuses, or other structures that require specialist-level care. The goal is not to keep every case in-house. The goal is to recommend the safest and most appropriate path for the patient.
If wisdom tooth removal can be handled at our office, the team will explain what to expect at the appointment and how to prepare. If a referral is recommended, we will explain why and help you understand the next step. Patients and parents of teens within the practice’s age range should feel comfortable asking questions about timing, monitoring, and whether removal is necessary.

After Your Visit

After wisdom tooth removal, home care instructions are important. The team will explain how to care for the area, what foods to consider at first, what to avoid, and when to call with questions. Healing needs can vary based on the number of teeth removed, the tooth position, and the complexity of the procedure.
If your wisdom teeth are not ready for removal or do not need removal, Dr. Dubina may recommend monitoring them during routine exams. A clear recommendation can help patients avoid unnecessary treatment while still staying ahead of problems that may develop later.

When to Schedule an Evaluation

A wisdom tooth evaluation may be helpful if a patient has soreness in the back of the mouth, swollen gum tissue, difficulty cleaning the area, pressure near the second molars, or a recommendation from another dental provider. Some wisdom teeth can be monitored over time, while others are easier to address before they cause repeated problems.
The evaluation does not automatically mean the teeth must be removed. It gives the dentist the information needed to recommend monitoring, in-office removal, or referral when the position of the teeth is more complex.

For Teens and Adults

Wisdom tooth concerns can come up during the teen years or later in adulthood. For teenagers within the practice’s age range, the evaluation may focus on development, available space, and whether the teeth are likely to create future problems. For adults, the focus may be symptoms, cleaning difficulty, gum concerns, or damage to nearby teeth.
Because every case is different, the recommendation should be based on imaging and clinical findings rather than age alone.
