What Is a Frenectomy?
A frenectomy is a soft tissue procedure that adjusts or releases a frenum, which is a small band of tissue in the mouth. Frenums can be found near the lips and under the tongue. In some cases, a tight or restrictive frenum may contribute to spacing concerns, gum pulling, speech or movement limitations, orthodontic considerations, or other functional concerns that should be evaluated by a dentist.
Ste. Genevieve Family Dental Care performs frenectomies using a soft tissue diode laser for appropriate children, teens, and adults. The broader practice does not market dental care to children under age 9, and infant lip or tongue ties are not treated at this office. If a patient is too young or needs a different level of care, referral will be recommended.

When a Frenectomy May Be Recommended
A frenectomy may be discussed when the tissue attachment affects comfort, oral function, gum health, or orthodontic planning. Not every frenum needs treatment. Some are normal and do not cause problems. The evaluation includes a review of the tissue attachment, symptoms or concerns, and whether treatment is appropriate.
For teens and adults, frenectomies may sometimes be connected to orthodontic care, spacing, gum tissue tension, or other dental concerns. For younger patients within the practice’s age range, the recommendation depends on cooperation, the clinical situation, and whether the procedure fits safely within the office scope. The goal is to make the right recommendation rather than treat every case in-house.
Laser Treatment Approach
The practice uses a soft tissue diode laser for frenectomies. Laser treatment can be useful for precise soft tissue care, but the specific approach depends on the patient and the tissue being treated. Before the procedure, we will review what area is being addressed, why treatment is recommended, and what to expect afterward.
After a frenectomy, home care instructions are important. The team will explain how to care for the area, what healing may look like, and whether any follow-up is needed. If the concern is connected to orthodontics, speech, or another provider’s recommendation, communication between care teams may also be helpful.
Coordinating Care When Needed
Some frenectomy recommendations come from a dentist, orthodontic evaluation, speech-related concern, or another provider’s observation. When another provider is involved, it can be helpful to understand the reason for the referral and what the procedure is expected to support.
The evaluation includes a review of the tissue and whether treatment is appropriate in our office.. If the concern does not fit the practice scope, including infant lip or tongue ties, referral is the right next step.
A Small Procedure with a Specific Purpose
A frenectomy should have a clear purpose. It may be recommended to reduce tissue tension, support orthodontic goals, improve movement, or address a specific dental concern. If the tissue is not causing a problem, treatment may not be needed.
